2010 - Giving Vulnerable Children a brighter future.
3rd August 2010
Thanks to your support, Fair Instant continues to help the poorest children in Colombias coffee growing regions, giving them access to a better quality of education.
Read how our latest project with Save the Children has improved the life of Bryan and his family.
Bryan Lopez, 15, was born in Pereira, Colombia, a city that has been especially affected by urban violence, child labour and forced recruitment by illegal armed groups.
Because of the armed conflict, Bryan and his family were forced from their homes and have moved several times. After the crash in world coffee prices, Bryans father was forced from growing coffee on their farm and now works in the construction industry, and his mother is currently unemployed. Bryans family now find themselves among the thousands of Colombian families who have become vulnerable to social exclusion as they lose their homes and livelihoods by violence and increased rural poverty.
Since Bryans parents do not have stable employment, Bryan has had to work. He currently works in a leisure club in La Tebaida from Thursday to Sunday where he earns between 10 and 20 dollars a week.
Thanks to the project supported by FAIR INSTANT, Bryan and his siblings are able to continue in school, study in a safe school environment and receive school lunches and subsidies for buying uniforms. The support and participation in the school decision-making process that this project provides has helped Bryan to increase his confidence and focus on his education. His parents have understood the importance of their children remaining in school so that they can develop as active citizens that contribute to their community.
Fair Instant stockists include Sainsburys, Morrisons and Waitrose as well as our new online shop that has just relaunched.
We have raised over 50,000 pounds in the first 6 months of this year and are we keen to reach our half a million target by the end of 2010, so keep supporting Fair Instant so that we can continue to help some of the most vulnerable children in Colombia.
Thank you.
